Our November speaker will be Ms Laura Seckbach Finn, the founder of Fly By Night, Inc.
Laura earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology and a Masters in Biology from the University of Central Florida. Her Master’s research concerned bats in buildings (urban bats) and the use of bat houses by central Florida bats. The study focused on roost choice, preferred microclimate and bat house design. Laura was also the first to study big-eared bats in Florida.
Among Laura’s several awards are the Best of Osteen Award for Wildlife Conservation in 2008 and 2009, awarded by the United States Local Business Association in Washington, D.C. In 2004, Bat Conservation International nominated her to the Bat House Hall of Fame after naming her a Distinguished Research Associate in 1999 and 2001.
Laura founded Fly By Night as a sole proprietor in 1994, the only organization of its kind in Florida. In 1997 the organization incorporated as Fly By Night, Inc.: the Bat Specialists. They became a Florida Not-For-Profit in 1999 and acquired 501(c) nonprofit status in 2001. More information on the organization can be researched on the website www.flybynightinc.org .
Using a power point presentation, and accompanied by two live bats, Ms Finn will explain the important role bats play in enhancing our environment and show why bats need our help and protection.
See you on the twenty-first.
